Temperatures often rise above 100 degrees during a hot summer’s day in Mansfield, TX with humidity levels to match. What you do not want is for your air conditioner to break down.

We at Minuteman Heating and Air understand why this is a very stressful event if it occurs. If you are young and elderly or have health problems this can be a dangerous time.

That is why we offer the most reliable heating and AC repair service in our area. High temperatures and humidity will make life unbearable without a working air conditioner. That is why we are always available to answer your call, whatever the time of day or night.

Have Your HVAC Unit Serviced During a Quiet Period

Minuteman Heating and Air would prefer not to have to visit you when your HVAC unit is broken. We much prefer to call during a quieter period during the spring or fall and give your unit an annual service. This service will deal with any problems before they become serious and keep your unit running safely and economically.

The checklist will involve replacing dirty air filters, cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils and the inside of the unit, checking the coolant levels are topped up, and many other checks.

Not having a service will only store up problems for the future. Your unit will run less efficiently and cost you more money in the form of higher energy bills. Ignoring certain warning signs will eventually lead to expensive repair bills and in the worst case, replacing the whole unit.

Warnings Sign to be on the Lookout For-

  • Larger than expected energy bills.
  • Reduced airflow
  • Reduced cooling or heating from the unit
  • Strange odors coming from the unit.
  • Strange noises.
  • Water puddles around the unit

If you spot any of these signs you may need a heating and AC repair soon and you need to call Minuteman.

What Can Cause These Problems?

Coolant Leaks

The coolant is pumped around the unit by the compressor. Depending on where it is in the system the coolant can be either in a gas or liquid state. When it is in the evaporator coil it is in a cold liquid state. Any warm air blown over it from your room will transfer its heat to the coolant. The cold liquid will now change into a warm gas and the now cooler air will be blown back into your room.

A coolant leak will reduce the amount of coolant in the HVAC, and less coolant will mean less cooling. You may notice that the air blown back into your room may not be as cool as before making heating and AC repair a priority.

The rest of the components in the HVAC will have to work hard to overcome the lower level of coolant. This increased effort will not only increase your energy bills but may cause the other components to overheat and fail, meaning you will need a heating and AC repair.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

If you spot frost or ice forming on the evaporator coils, then there is a good chance that the coil is dirty, or that not enough warm air is flowing across it.

The coil needs regular cleaning because any dirt can form an insulating layer reducing the rate of heat transfer between the warm air and the coolant. If the coil freezes, then you should turn the HVAC unit off and wait until it thaws. Continuing to use the HVAC unit when the evaporator coil is frozen could lead to a heating and AC repair.

Dirty air filters and intake grilles will reduce the airflow over the coil. Without enough warm air flowing over the coil, it may freeze, causing the AC unit to work harder, increasing the stress on the components, and leading to heating and AC repair in TX.

Condenser Is Dirty

The coolant having changed into a warm gas now passes through the condenser. The excess heat is radiated to the outside air with the aid of cooling fins. As they are located outside both the condenser and cooling fins will get covered in dirt and grime.

This will act as an insulating layer reducing the rate at which the excess heat is lost to the outside air. This means they will need to be periodically cleaned. Failure to remove the dirt and grime can cause the condenser to overheat and burn out needing a heating and AC repair.

Are the Air Ducts Damaged?

It is also a good idea to have your ductwork inspected periodically, as any damage will allow hot or cold air to escape through the gaps. The gaps can allow insects or even rodents to enter the ducts as well as leading to a build-up of dirt and pollen. Escaping air will mean escaping dollar bills, as it has been calculated that up to 30 percent of an HVAC’s energy output is lost this way.

Strange Noises

Nothing sets you on edge more than a strange noise coming from a machine. A damaged fan may be the cause of any clunking sound you may hear. Other strange noises may be due to something in the motor that needs fixing or that the fan belt needs replacing.

It is best not to ignore these sounds. A fan may be starting to come loose, or its blades may have bent. This could reduce the airflow over the evaporator coil, causing it to freeze. These noises need to be investigated or else you will need major heating and AC repair.
