Mansfield, TX is a prosperous residential city part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan area with a population of 73,550 in 2020. Temperatures often rise above 90 degrees, it can be a dangerous time for both the young and the elderly, and heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration are not uncommon. If your AC unit breaks down on a hot summer’s day you need a reliable air conditioning repair rapidly.
Minuteman Heating and Air understands just how vital it is to have dependable air conditioning, during hot Texas summers, and is committed to offering the absolute best air conditioning service to the community of Mansfield, TX.
How Does an AC Unit work?
A fan blows warm air from the room over evaporator coils. Volatile coolant liquid in the coils absorbs the heat from the air and this colder air is blown back into the room. As it absorbs the heat the liquid is changed into a gas. This gas passes through a compressor and is compressed into a warmer high-pressure gas. After passing through a condenser the warm gas is changed back into a cold liquid again. Outside air that passes over the condenser together with cooling fins radiate the excess heat outside. The coolant continues in a loop back to the evaporator coils and this cycle repeats. After a while, the warm air inside the room will be removed outside.
Many elements in an AC unit could go wrong requiring an air conditioning repair. There are some signs that you should be on the lookout for.
Coolant Levels Are Low
The coolant in your AC unit is crucial to removing the excess heat and humidity from the air in your room. Each AC unit requires an optimum level of coolant for it to work at maximum efficiency. Remember less coolant means less cooling. Finding any leaks and topping up the coolant is important. You may notice less cold air coming from the unit and frost forming on the evaporator coil. This can not only damage the coil but put extra strain on the AC unit by causing it to work harder. This in turn will lead to increased energy bills and maybe an air conditioning repair.
Evaporator Coil Is Frozen
An evaporator coil needs a constant supply of air to flow over it to stop freezing. If it starts to freeze you should turn off the AC unit immediately. A frozen evaporator coil will make the compressor work harder, causing it to overheat and burn out, resulting in an expensive air conditioning repair.
Dirty air filters, a dirty evaporator coil, and blocked air grills can restrict airflow over the evaporator coil, and these need regular cleaning. Such cleaning is part of Minuteman’s annual maintenance service from one of our many highly trained technicians.
Dirty and Blocked Condensers
The condenser also needs plenty of air to flow over to remove the excess heat from the house. Any dirt or grime on the condenser or cooling fins will act as an insulating layer slowing the transfer of heat to the outside air. Allowing the grime to build up means that the condenser works harder increasing the wear and tear on it.
Leaking Ducts
In many buildings air ducts transport cool air around the house. Any damage to joint seals or the ducts themselves can allow the cool air to escape. It is believed that 20-30 percent of an AC unit’s energy is wasted in this way. This means higher energy bills for you and the increased risk of an air conditioning repair as the AC unit is working harder to achieve the temperature you have set.
Thermostat Issues
A thermostat needs to be calibrated and correctly placed to make the AC unit more efficient. One placed in direct sunlight will trick the AC unit into thinking the temperature is higher than it is. The older dial-type thermostats need to be recalibrated more and more often, and it may be better to have one of Minuteman’s technicians replace it with a new programmable thermostat.
Fan Problems and Air Conditioning Repair
Any problems with the fans will reduce the airflow and cause problems like the evaporator coil freezing. Strange noises can indicate a loose blade or a worn-out belt. Do not wait, call Minuteman for a speedy air conditioning repair. The longer you wait the greater the repair bill will be.
Clogged AC Drain Line
The moisture from the warm air must go somewhere. Any condensation that your HVAC unit produces will be removed via a drain line running from the condenser. Check the drain line periodically, as mold and mildew will grow and cause a clog.
The Age of Your HVAC
If your AC unit needs to be repaired more frequently then it may be time to replace it. An older model will not be as energy-efficient as a newer one and so you will save money in the long run. An air conditioning repair on an older unit will cost more and more as the parts get harder to find.
Regular Maintenance
We at Minuteman Heating and Air recommend the regular maintenance of your plumbing system. This will keep everything running smoothly and help with the early identification of any potential problems, saving you from an expensive air conditioning repair.
