Signs That You Need an Air Conditioning Repair
Even a well-serviced air conditioner will break down occasionally and usually at the most inconvenient time. But there are some signs that you can be on the lookout for. Spotting a sign early will allow you to take remedial action to avoid the problem or undertake an air conditioning repair at a time to suit you.
Your Air Conditioner Is Short-Cycling
A correctly working air conditioner will usually have 3 cycles per hour. A full cooling cycle will consist of the compressor working for ten minutes and then resting for another ten. This allows for the efficient cooling of your home. If your air conditioner is cutting off before you reach the desired temperature, you may have a short-cycling problem.
The major causes of short-cycling are dirty air filters, frozen evaporator coils, and low coolant levels, and these issues are dealt with during a regular service.
Frost Forming on the Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coils need two main things to work properly. The first is a constant supply of warm air being blown over it and the other is that the coolant level is constantly topped up. Without either, frost or ice will start to form on the coils.
There are a couple of reasons why the warm airflow is restricted. The air filters could be dirty, and therefore need replacing or cleaning. This will have the added effect of improving air quality as fewer dirt particles and pollen will be allowed in your home. If there is a problem with the fan this too will reduce the airflow over the coils.
Lack of Coolant
As the warm air is blown over the evaporator coil the coolant inside the coil will extract the heat from it. Without enough coolant, not enough heat will be extracted, and the cooling effect will be reduced. Once frost and ice start to form they will act as an insulating layer, further reducing the rate at which heat is extracted from the warm air.
If the frost and ice buildup is not dealt with, the evaporator coil could eventually freeze. At this point, you would have to turn the air conditioner off to allow the coil to thaw. This is not something you want to do as your unit could be out of action for up to 24 hours.
Increased Energy Bills
If you expect your energy bills are unusually high during the summer as you use your air conditioner more this could indicate a problem with your unit. An issue with one component such as the evaporator coil starting to freeze will cause the others like the compressor having to work harder to maintain the temperature.
As the component starts to work harder, it will use more energy and drive up your bills. A harder working unit will get hotter and be more likely to burn out, needing an air conditioning repair from Minuteman Heating & Air.
High Humidity Levels
If the cooling effect is reduced, then the amount of heat extracted from the warm air must also have been reduced. The air that has now been blown back into your home will be warmer. If it is warmer, it will contain more moisture, and this will increase the humidity levels in your home.
You Find Water on the Floor and Inside Your Unit
Another cause of higher humidity is water overflowing the drain pan. Once the heat is extracted from the warm air the moisture is deposited in the drain pan and then flows through the AC drain line. The extra moisture in the air conditioner could cause mildew and algae to grow in the air conditioner’s drain line. This will cause a blockage and the water in the drain pan will overflow into your unit and then onto the floor. Both the drain pan and line will need to be cleaned regularly to prevent this from happening.
You Notice Strange Smells and Noises
If mold and mildew are growing this could explain any moldy smell in your home. Strange noises are often caused by faulty fans. For instance, a screeching sound could be due to worn-out fan belts or bearings in the fan motor. If you are concerned about any strange noises or smells coming from your air conditioner you should call us straight away.
